Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – The end is in sight for a major downtown Rochester road project.

Work on the stretch of 4th St SW between 1st and 6th avenues began in early July last year. It was scheduled to be completed by the end of the construction season but the contractor was not able to finish the work on time, forcing the project to resume this year.

Here's a photo of the street from Sept 2017.

The city Public Works Dept. said the work would be completed by the end of August and it looks like this schedule will be met. The department says road striping is scheduled to begin Monday and be completed by the end of next week.

The nearly $7-million project includes crosswalks across 4th Street that are shortened by curb bump-outs. Some crosswalks will have a raised median, providing pedestrian refuge. A curbless intersection has been constructed at 2nd Avenue to prototype the future Discovery Walk curbless street design.

Here's a look back at the work on the project.
