Mayo Planning Remodel for Entrances to Key Buildings During Rochester Expansion

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- Mayo Clinic is continuing to prepare for construction of its massive expansion in downtown Rochester.

Last week the health care giant announced it accelerated its plans to add two staff parking ramps. 

Mayo officials say the goal of expediting the construction of the ramps at the St. Mary’s campus and downtown Rochester campus is to alleviate disruption to its employees commutes caused by the construction.

Late last year Mayo announced a $5 billion expansion to its campus in downtown Rochester. Officials have previously said construction of the expansion is scheduled to get underway this year. 

Mayo Clinic Planning Entrance Remodel for Downtown Rochester Campus

Earlier this week, Mayo informed staff of plans to temporarily change the entrance to the east side of two of its signature buildings in downtown Rochester. 

A statement to KROC News from Mayo Clinic says a project to remodel the existing entrances on the east side of the Gonda and Mayo Buildings will begin in the coming months. 

The remodel will serve as a temporary front door to Mayo’s downtown entrance, while crews build the expansion on the west side of the buildings. 

Mayo is also planning to use part of the Annenberg Plaza, which is located on the east side of the buildings, as a temporary traffic way for shuttle drop off. 

The art, fountain, greenspace, seating areas, walking paths and landscaping that populate the plaza will remain intact during the shuttle drop off, the statement says. 

Upon completion of the downtown campus expansion, which is slated for 2030, the plaza will be returned to pedestrian-only use and be “further integrated into the fabric of the campus,” the Mayo statement says.
