Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Planning and Zoning Commission has approved the preliminary plans for a major expansion of another Mayo Clinic facility in the city. Mayo is proposing adding almost 70,000 square feet of space to its existing tissue archives warehouse just off Civic Center Drive Northwest.

The plans submitted by the Mayo Clinic actually replace a previous expansion plan that was authorized by the city in 1996 but canceled by Mayo before any construction began. The revised proposal calls for a two-phase project, with the first phase starting next year. It involves the construction a new two-story building on the north side of the existing structure to add over 30,000 square feet of space needed to address the Mayo Clinic’s growing demand for room to archive patient tissue samples.

The second phase would add another three floors to the new building when the additional space is needed. That would create a five-story structure and expand the total space available in the warehouse to over 96,000 square feet.

The proposal will now go to the Rochester Council for a future public hearing.
