Rochester, MN (KROC-A News) - A major Mayo Clinic project that was apparently delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, is back on track and has become much larger than originally planned.

The Mayo Clinic today announced construction is expected to begin this spring on the now 11-story research facility that will be named the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Building. The original plan, announced in June 2019, called for a 4-story building within the Destination Medical Center Discovery Square District at the corner of 3rd Street and 4th Avenue Southwest just north of the Mayo Clinic Opus Imaging Building.

The New York-based Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Foundation is contributing over $49 million to help cover the $120 million price tag for the research center. The foundation had previously pledged $32 million for the originally 64,000 square foot building. With the addition of 7 floors, the project now calls for 176,000 square feet of flexible laboratory space with subway connections to the Opus Imaging Center and the Mayo Clinic Baldwin Building.

"Research is a key pillar of our 2030 strategy," says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., Mayo Clinic's president and CEO. "We’re committed to advancing more cures, connecting more patients to our expanded expertise, and transforming health care for people everywhere. And that transformation starts with research."

A Mayo Clinic news release says "the pandemic experience has demonstrated the need to grow and accelerate scientific achievements," and adds science needs physical space. The new research center is scheduled to open near the end of 2023.
