Minneapolis Police Mourn Loss of Mounted Patrol Horse Haven
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minneapolis Police Department is planning a memorial service in the spring for what a news release describes as a cherished member of the Departments Mounted Patrol Unit.
Haven, a 16-hand-tall Frasian/Shire/Quarter gelding, died yesterday following complications from surgery. A news release issued by the Minneapolis Police Department says the horse experienced intestinal issues, and displayed initial signs of recovery, he suffered a medical emergency Saturday morning and passed away during surgery.

“Haven wasn’t just a horse; he was a vital part of our team and a bridge between our officers and the community,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “Mounted Patrol horses bring unique skills and value to our mission. They provide strength, calmness, and a sense of connection, often fostering positive and meaningful interactions between officers and the public. Haven was an exceptional example of this, and his loss is felt deeply throughout our department, especially by those who worked closely with him. He will be missed but never forgotten.”
Haven, who was born in 2008, joined the Minneapolis Police Mounted Patrol in 2017. The news release says the horse was "known for his friendly demeanor and calm strength," and was "steadfast in chaotic situations and approachable to the community."
