Minnesota Man Captured in Middle East Faces Terrorism Charge
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Minnesota man captured by Syrian Democratic Forces last year has been indicted on a terrorism-related charge by a federal grand jury.
US Attorney for Minnesota Erica MacDonald today announced 23-year-old Abdelhamid Al-Madioum of St. Louis Park is charged with providing material support to the Islamic State of Iraq and ISIS. Following his capture in the Middle East, Al-Madioum was recently transferred to FBI custody and returned to Minnesota for prosecution.
According to the indictment, Al-Madioum and his family traveled to Morocco in June 2015 to visit their extended family. Federal prosecutors say he then left Morocco and traveled to Istanbul, Turkey, and then into Iraq and Syria where he joined ISIS.
Al-Madioum, who is a naturalized US citizen, was captured by the Syrian Democratic Forces in March of last year.
