Minnesota Man Rescued After Capsizing Kayak While Duck Hunting
Alexandria, MN (KROC-AM News) - A cell phone likely saved the life of a kayaker in western Minnesota.
The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says an Alexandria man was out duck hunting when his kayak overturned. The incident occurred around 8 AM on Lake Oscar, about 10 miles west of Alexandria.
A Douglas County deputy reported that Shawn Reishus was in about 5 feet of water when the kayak capsized. He attempted to paddle to shore after flipping the kayak upright, but it sank about 100 yards from the shoreline. Reishus indicated that he then began swimming toward shore until his cell phone regained a signal and he was able to call 911.
The responding deputies and first responders were able to rescue the man and provide medical treatment at the scene before he was transported by ambulance to a hospital. A Sheriff's Office spokesman says his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.
The National Weather Service says the temperature in the Alexandria area with a mishap occurred was only around 20 degrees.
