The family member told authorities that the teenager attempted to swim back to the canoe but the strong winds pushed the canoe farther away from him. The 15-year-old then attempted to swim to shore and the family member lost sight of him as they drifted farther apart.
The Sheriff's Office reported that there were no lifejackets on the canoe. Eagle Lake is located near Windom, about 60 miles west of Mankato.
