A news release issued by the Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday morning says deputies responded to a report of the missing teen at the lake around 6:45 Monday night.
The teen was reported missing while canoeing with a family member. He was last seen on Eagle Lake, which is about 60 miles west of Mankato.
Authorities say the family member reported the 15-year-old boy went into the water to retrieve a lost oar. He tried to swim back to the canoe but a strong gust of wind pushed the canoe away from the teenager.
The 15-year-old then tried to swim to shore and the family member lost sight of him. There were no life jackets on the boat, the news release says.
Members of multiple agencies in southwestern Minnesota conducted an initial search of the lake and shoreline that lasted until about 2 a.m. Tuesday. Authorities then returned to the lake to continue search efforts in the daylight on Tuesday.
The second search was suspended at 9 p.m. A news release published Tuesday night says authorities plan to resume the search on Wednesday.
The boy’s name has not been released.
