Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News)  - A Minnesota man has been sentenced to just over 24 years in federal prison in a case that included kidnapping and torture.

US Attorney for Minnesota Andrew Luger says 24-year-old José Angel Chapa-Aguilera previously entered guilty pleas to a charge of possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime and possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine. Court records indicate the charges stemmed from several crimes, including a traffic stop conducted by Worthington Police in April of last year that led to the discovery of a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol and more than 2 pounds of methamphetamine inside the man's vehicle.

In December of last year, Chape-Aguilera was accused of brandishing a handgun when he confronted a man about a drug debt at his home in Brooklyn Park. According to court documents, Chapa-Aquilera ordered the man to the ground, tied his hands behind his back, and then "beat and tortured the victim for hours using a heated knife and a pipe."

Chapa-Aquilera then barricaded the victim in a crawlspace under the house, but the man later managed to escape and sought assistance from law enforcement. His injuries, which were extensive enough to require a blood transfusion, included numerous burns, broken ribs, and a large laceration above his eye. Investigators were able to obtain a search warrant for the residence and seized about 3 pounds of methamphetamine.

.
A news release says Chapa-Aguilera was arrested in January of this year following a high-speed chase in the Twin Cities. Federal prosecutors say he was driving a purple-camouflage Humvee and was apprehended after officers managed to disable the vehicle. Inside, they found a 9 mm handgun and 9 mm ammunition.
