Inver Grove Heights, MN (KROC-AM News)- The Inver Grove Heights Police Department is mourning the loss of one of its own.

A news release says paramedics and firefighters responded to a medical emergency involving an Inver Grove Heights police officer on April 28. The officer was transported to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he died on Sunday surrounded by family and friends. 

Officials have identified the officer as Ben Bidon. Ben graduated from Blaine High School then served in the Army from 2005-2009, which included a 14-month tour during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received the following recognition during his time in uniform: 

• Army Commendation Medal

• Army Good Conduct Medal

• National Defense Service Medal

• Global War on Terrorism Service Medal

• Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star

• Army Service Ribbon

• Overseas Service Ribbon

• Combat Infantryman Badge

• Expert Infantry Badge

• Parachutist Badge

• Air Assault Badge

• Driver and Mechanic Badge

Ben began serving as a police officer in Inver Grove Heights in 2015. His fellow officers describe him as compassionate and diligent in his duties and is being remembered for serving the public with pride, the news release says. Ben served as a crime scene technician, field training officer, firearms and use of force instructor, SWAT operator and investigator during his tenure as a police officer.

He was honored with the Inver Grove Heights Police Department’s live saving award in 2020 and was the recipient of the Chief's Award of Merit last year. Ben leaves behind his wife and three daughters. He was known as an avid hunter and hockey player and took many camping and hiking trips with his family. 

Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later time. The Inver Grove Heights Public Safety Foundation has set up a GoFundMe page to assist Ben’s family.
