Leave it to the Minnesota Vikings to find themselves on the wrong side of history. Again.

Following Minnesota's first preseason game on August 10, the team's rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy complained of some knee soreness that would eventually lead to a season-ending surgery.

Before that, McCarthy did excite fans with a performance many found promising from the rookie signal-caller. Despite throwing an interception to Raiders cornerback Jack Jones to start his time on the field, J.J. did turn things around. He went on to have a stat line that included connecting on 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

As you know, the complaint of knee soreness would eventually be diagnosed as a torn meniscus in his right knee. While there was optimism that the tear was minor and would only sideline him for a matter of weeks, it was ultimately discovered that the tear was serious enough to need a surgical repair that would sideline him for the rest of the season.

That's where we get into the history the headline for this story mentions.

As NFL.com mentioned in their story on the subject, J.J. McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings now become a sports trivia answer for a question nobody wants to be involved with.

With J.J. McCarthy's season-ending injury in the first preseason game, he becomes the first quarterback drafted in the top-10 by a team since the NFL's Super Bowl era began back in 1967 to miss his entire rookie season due to an injury.

The author for the NFL.com story used the word "unprecedented". Leave it to the Vikings (or a Minnesota sports team in general) to find themselves in the category of "unprecedented" non-positive news.

While J.J. recovers from his surgery, let's hope for the best from Sam Darnold and the rest of the team and ultimately a speedy and complete recovery for McCarthy to get him ready to hopefully see some action next season.
