ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota officials and propane suppliers say they're prepared to avoid repeating the shortages that hit the Midwest last winter.

With another cold winter approaching, several propane storage facilities in the region have increased capacity and more Minnesota farmers and homeowners have filled up their fuel supplies early in preparation.

Gov. Mark Dayton says the state is now in better position to ensure Minnesotans have access to the fuel. He met with industry officials to discuss preparations Tuesday afternoon.

A late start to last year's planting season pushed harvest back into a wet fall, requiring more of the fuel to dry out crops. And the brutally cold winter drove up propane demand to heat houses, making the shortage worse.

Dayton says the state will continue monitoring propane supplies as winter approaches.
