Morning Snow Storm Closes Schools, Snarls Traffic in Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A snow storm brought measurable snowfall and snarled traffic on roads in the Rochester area Friday morning.
Preliminary snow measurements from the National Weather Service indicate Rochester saw anywhere from 3.5 to 4 inches of snow as of 8:10 Friday morning. The highest reported snowfall totals in Olmsted County so far is 4.3 inches in Predmore.
The highest recorded snowfall so far is west of Fillmore, where officials tallied 6.7 inches of snow. The City of Austin has measured 6.5 inches of snow as of 7:16 a.m. Friday.
The snowfall made for a messy morning commute on Rochester area roads. Minnesota State Patrol Sgt. Troy Christenson said troopers responded to 20 property damage crashes between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. Friday.
Christenson also said there 17 vehicles that went off the road that required tow truck and/or state trooper assistance and seven jack-knifed semis. The snow fall also prompted several school districts across the region, including Rochester Public Schools, to cancel classes.
The National Weather Service forecast predicts significant cloud cover for the remainder of the day Friday with another round of snow and mixed precipitation possible on Saturday.
