Lutsen, MN (MinnesotaNow)- A man lost his life after being pulled into Lake Superior along Minnesota’s north shore.

That’s according to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office which says the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday. 

First responders were able to see the man's body, but the recovery operation was hindered by rough water.

61-Year-Old Man Dies in Lake Superior Water Emergency in Lutsen

Authorities responded to the fatal water emergency in Lutsen. A woman who was sitting with the victim on the shore reported she went back to a cabin while the man stayed along the water.

She said she looked back and saw a large wave knock the man over. He was then pulled into the lake and was unable to get back to shore, a news release says. 

Responding deputies spotted the man’s body about 100 feet from the shore. 

A rescue team launched a boat 9 miles southwest of the emergency in Tofte but had to turn back due to being unable to navigate the rough water, authorities say.

The U.S. Border Patrol then launched a boat 18 miles northeast of the emergency in Grand Marais and recovered the man’s body. 

He is being described as a 61-year-old. His name has not been released. 

Authorities have since transferred the body to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy. The fatal water emergency is under investigation.
