Prison Sentence For Man Convicted of Shooting in Rochester Home

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A former Rochester man has received a prison sentence for a shooting that occurred in the city last year.

46-year-old Corey Schreiber, who now has a Wykoff address, was charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and illegal possession of a firearm following his arrest several months after the shooting occurred in the 2800 block of Riverwood Lane Northwest. According to the criminal complaint, Rochester police officers on patrol in the area heard gunshots and then sought two men running out of the neighborhood.

The charges stated the officers located the victim, who reported that he had gone to a home to help a woman who was moving out. The man indicated that he got into an argument with a homeowner and then heard another person say, "should I shoot this guy?" The court document says the victim told police he responded by running out of the house, and that's when he heard several gunshots. He also stated that he heard a person in the home replied to the question by saying "yes."

The criminal complaint indicated investigators located two bullet holes in the screen on a patio door at the residence. Investigators reported that it appeared the bullets were fired from inside the home and struck an umbrella attached to patio furniture and then grazed the top of a wooden deck.

The court document says police also found obvious evidence of drug use throughout the house, including white powder that tested positive for cocaine, a pile of small white pills, and multiple syringes. The homeowner was eventually charged with substance related offenses and identified Schreiber as the person who fired a gun as the victim was fleeing out the back door.

Schreiber earlier entered into a plea agreement and admitted to the second-degree assault charge in exchange for the dismissal of the charge of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Court records show he was convicted of a felony count of threats of violence in Hennepin County in 2021.

Schreiber was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison. The sentencing order does give him credit for the six days he has already served in jail.
