Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A semi-trailer was heavily damaged in an unusual traffic crash just west of Rochester on Monday.

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office says the driver of the truck was making a right hand turn onto 60th Avenue Northwest from westbound Highway 14 around 10:30 in the morning when the machine used to maintain railroad tracks smashed into the back of the trailer. The truck driver told deputies the railroad crossing arms and warning lights were not activated when the crash occurred.

The operator of the railroad tamper machine told deputies he did not see the semi-truck until it was too late to avoid the collision. A spokesman says an investigation has determined the machinery used to level the ballast under the rails does not automatically trigger the rail crossing arms and lights.

No injuries were reported, but the damage to the semi-trailer was estimated at around $60,000. There was also damage to the railroad maintenance machinery, but a dollar amount is not available.
