Retrial of Murder Charge Against Rochester Man Begins Monday
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The process of seating the jury for a trial in a high profile Rochester criminal case is expected to begin Monday in Olmsted County Court.
It will be Alexander Weiss' second trial on a second-degree murder charge stemming from a fatal shooting that occurred on January 14th of last year. The 26-year-old Rochester man's first trial ended earlier this year with a hung jury and a declaration of a mistrial.
Weiss, who had a permit to carry a handgun, shot and fatally wounded 17-year-old Muhammed Rahim during a confrontation that followed a minor traffic crash. Weiss testified in his own defense during the trial and told the jury he was acting in self-defense.
The judge in the case is still considering a number of pretrial motions, including a defense request to allow testimony concerning the victim's criminal history and his activities in the hours preceding his death.
