Rochester Firefighters Battle Garage Fire in Bitter Cold

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester firefighters were called out into the bitter cold Friday afternoon to extinguish a fire that broke out in the detached garage behind an apartment/condominium in northwest Rochester.
Officials say a nearby homeowner called 911 after they spotted smoke coming from the garage in the 5800 block of 25th Street Northwest around 1:20 p.m. The Stewartville and Byron Fire Departments were initially called to assist because multiple units from the Rochester Fire Department had been called to another residential fire in northeast Rochester, but their response was canceled prior to arrival.
The garage was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at the scene. it was also reported that the fire was spreading to the nearby apartment building and an exterior deck had caught fire as well as some siding.
Those flames were quickly extinguished before the fire crews focused on the garage. According to a news release, the garage and a vehicle parked inside it are considered a total loss. A second vehicle parked outside the garage was damaged, along with the siding and the deck on the apartment.
There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
