Rochester, MN ( KROC AM News) - A longtime piece of Rochester’s skyline will soon be gone.

The Rochester Public Utilities Board has approved a bid to bring down the tall tower at the Silver Lake Power Plant.

Demolition of the stack is expected to begin next month and be completed by October. The $454,000 bid was awarded to Veit and Company.

The stack hasn’t been in use since the plant stopped burning coal to produce electricity in 2013.

RPU decommissioned the electrical plant but steam is still produced at the site for Mayo Clinic. The plant was built in 1949.

At this time, there is no long term plan for the property.
