Rochester Man Crashes While Racing Brother; Alcohol Suspected
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A Rochester man suspected of being under the influence crashed his car Thursday and as he was being taken to the hospital, his brother was on his way to jail.
Police Capt. Casey Moilanen says the crash happened around 6:00 pm in the 4200 block of Maine Ave SE.
Moilanen says the car driven by the 34-year-old man was traveling at a high rate of speed when it crashed into a tree and burst into flames. The man was able to get out of the burning car but suffered head and hand injuries in the crash. Before he was placed in an ambulance, officers smelled alcohol on his breath and decided to get a blood sample.
Meanwhile, a man who said he was the driver’s brother walked up and said the two had been racing each other while on their way to see a movie when the crash occurred.
Moilanen says officers also detected alcohol on his breath and after the 38-year-old failed sobriety tests, he was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
