Rochester, MN Sees Historic Dry Weather Stretch
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The recent stretch of dry weather in Rochester is more than unusual, it’s historic.
That’s according to the latest update from the U.S. Drought Monitor. The update summary says 15.78 inches of rain fell at the Rochester International Airport through May 15 of this year.
That’s over six inches above the 20-year-average. From May 15-June 29, only 1.41 inches of rain has been reported, well below the 20-year-average of 7.6 inches.
The mid-May to end of June stretch is the least amount of rain recorded in the history of Rochester since record keeping began back in 1887. The previous record low for that stretch was set in 1964 when 1.64 inches of rain fell.
Some relief may be on the way, however the timing could be disruptive. The National Weather Service says Sunday morning that there’s a 60-80% chance of thunderstorms, possibly severe, impacting Rochester and the surrounding communities on the evening of the Independence Day holiday.
