Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester Police Department will conduct an active shooter drill on Friday.

Police Department Communications Coordinator Amanda Grayson noted that the training exercise, which was planned well in advance, comes just days after the tragic mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School and Church in Minneapolis. Local residents can expect to see significant numbers of uniformed first responders and emergency vehicles near the former Mighty Oaks Early Learning School, located off Marion Road Southeast in the 3800 block of 50th Avenue.

The active shooter drill is scheduled to take place between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. For safety reasons, the exercise will be closed to the media and public. Participants include the Rochester Police Department, Rochester Fire Department, Mayo Clinic Ambulance Service, and Rochester Emergency Management.

Following the deadly shooting in Minneapolis, which claimed the lives of two young children and wounded 17 others—including 14 more children—Rochester Police Chief Jim Franklin announced an increase in uniformed patrols around Rochester schools. He also informed the Rochester School District that school resource officers stationed in secondary schools had been placed on heightened alert.
