Rochester Police Arrest 14-Year-Old Serial Car Thief
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A rather unusual arrest for a Rochester police officer Monday night.
A motorist called 911 to report an SUV driving erratically on Highway 52 near 65th St. An officer located the vehicle parked at a nearby apartment complex, still running with its lights on. The officer saw a person approach the vehicle and then take off running after spotting the patrol car.
The officer chased the suspect and apprehended him - and also found a BB handgun the suspect had dropped during the chase.
The suspect was identified as a 14-year-old from St. Paul - who was wanted on two warrants for motor vehicle theft in that city.
Turns out the SUV he was driving was also stolen - from a mentor at a St. Paul youth program who had been working with the teenager. The teen later told officers about a video on his phone that showed him having consensual sex with a 12-year-old girl. He told police the mentor had forced them to have sex - which was later determined to be another lie.
He is now facing numerous criminal charges in Olmsted County Court.
