Rochester Police Shoot and Kill Armed Robbery Suspect
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A Rochester Police officer shot and killed man armed with an ax early Saturday morning.
A news release from the Rochester Police Department says officers responded to the report of a robbery at a business in the 2,000 block of Broadway Ave. South at 10:59 p.m. A white male reportedly entered the business with an ax, took cash and fled in a van.
Police located the van at 12:44 Saturday morning on Hwy. 63 on the south side of the Hwy. 52 overpass and conducted a traffic stop. The preliminary report indicates the man got out of his vehicle and charged towards the officer while holding the ax. The officer then shot the suspect.
Police say efforts to save the suspect were unsuccessful and he later died from his injuries. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is now investigating the case. Investigators have yet to release the name of the suspect and the officer involved in the shooting. Police say the officer has been with the Rochester Police Department for over a year and was previously an officer with a different agency.
