Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- An opening date has been announced for Rochester’s newest playground.

The playground is one piece of a massive project to upgrade one of the city’s largest parks. 

In a news release announcing the opening of the playground, the City of Rochester also announced a pause of work on the rest of the project.

New Playground Opens at Silver Lake Park, Work Pauses for the Winter

The new west playground at Silver Lake Park is set to open to the public on Saturday, Nov. 8. It’s located at 770 West Silver Lake Dr. NE. 

Along with building the new playground, crews earlier this year completed the Indigenous Gathering Area.

“The Silver Lake Park improvements are designed to enhance recreation, access and enjoyment for everyone in our community,” said Mike Nigbur, Parks and Forestry Division Head. “We’re excited to open the West Playground and look forward to completing the rest of the project next year.” 

Next year, work will resume on construction of a new swimming pool and upgrading the skate park. Along with a new pool, the aquatics area will also have a new bath house and splash pad. 

A basketball court was also added southeast of the pool.

The $10.5 million project, which is being funded through revenues produced by the 2020 City Park Referendum, along with additional appropriations approved by the Rochester City Council, and various state grants, is set to be completed by next Fall, according to the project’s website.
