The rule takes effect every year between October 1 and April 30. It prevents utility providers from disconnecting gas and electric heating service to customers who are behind on their payments.

Rochester Public Utilities is asking customers who are not current on their accounts to make an immediate payment or to contact customer service to learn more about assistance programs. The number to call is 507-280-1500.

People’s Energy Cooperative says the maximum for the Energy Assistance Program Crisis Benefit has been upped to $3,000. Members facing a pending heating/electricity disconnection are required to contact their utility provider regarding the assistance by June 30.

Xcel Energy is reminding customers behind on their bills that assistance is available. The Minneapolis-based utility provider says the assistance programs have helped thousands of customers.

One assistance option is provided by the Minnesota Energy Assistance Program. It pays up to $2,000 for eligible households to help with costs of heat, power, water and repairing or replacing a broken heating system.
