Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The City of Rochester has been informed that it has been awarded a nearly $20 million grant to help finance the 6th Street Southeast bridge project.

The funding is from the US Department of Transportation Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program. A news release issued by the city indicates the federal grant will cover about two-thirds of the nearly $30 million estimated price tag for the project. The remaining $10 million would come from Destination Medical Center infrastructure funds.

“This important infrastructure project will improve transportation connectivity and safety for our neighborhoods and downtown, as well as help, catalyze redeveloping of an underutilized area in our community,” shared Deputy City Administrator Cindy Steinhauser. “Neighborhoods in this area have been historically bypassed for redevelopment due to a lack of transportation access, and this project can
change that.”

The 6th Street bridge project is currently in the design phase. City officials say a final design is expected to be completed next year, which will clear the way for the awarding of contracts and construction.

According to the news release, the new bridge will "connect the street and trail network across the Zumbro River, enhance pedestrian and biking mobility, and improve transit efficiency with more direct routes downtown for neighbors, Rochester residents, and visitors."

A total of six Minnesota projects received funding through the US DOT grant program. The $19.9 million awarded for the Rochester project was the second largest among the Minnesota grants, which totaled nearly $100 million.
