Rochester Woman Accused of Stealing Thousands of Dollars from Nursing Home Resident
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A Rochester woman is facing a felony financial exploitation charge after being accused of stealing thousands of dollars from a vulnerable man.
The criminal complaint says she had power of attorney for a man who lives in a nursing home. The court document was filed in Olmsted County Court on Thursday.
An Olmsted County social worker made the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office aware of an Adult Maltreatment Report in June of last year. The court document says a detective reviewed banking records and found multiple transfers to a Cash App account registered to 34-year-old Jessica Mae Williams.
The banking review also found transactions at fast food restaurants, a cell phone store and gas stations in Rochester, according to the complaint.
The victim told authorities he made Williams his power of attorney when he moved into a nursing home last January then revoked the decision this past May when he learned Williams was spending his money for her own benefit, the complaint says.
He said Williams never gave him or the nursing home items for his care and that Williams was never authorized to spend money on herself, according to the complaint.
Staff at the nursing home told the investigator that Williams never provided the victim with items for his care and that she never responded to numerous attempts to contact her, the court document says.
The purchases and Cash App transfers Williams made with the victim’s money totaled $8,776.20, the complaint alleges.
Williams told investigators she was named the victims power of attorney and said she thought the nursing home would contact her when the victim needed items, according to the complaint.
She said the victim told her he could use her money and admitted to making the Cash App transactions. Williams is due to make her first court appearance next month.
