Police Captain Casey Moilanen said officers responded to the discovery of the woman on Saturday. She was found in a snowbank by the Apache Mall by her wife who was out looking for her.
Officers responded to the 800 block of 16th St. Southwest following a call from the overdose victim's wife. Moilanen said the officers revived the 42-year-old woman by administering two doses of Narcan.
The woman, who Moilanen said used heroin prior to the overdose, was taken by Mayo Clinic Ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital for further treatment. Police say it was the second time in a week the woman was found outside and had to be revived from an overdose.
Moilanen said the Rochester Police Department’s (RPD) interaction with overdose victims does not end with reviving them. He says overdose cases are assigned to a sergeant who connects overdose victims with addiction treatment resources in the community.
If you or someone you know if struggling with drug and/or alcohol dependence, help is available through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration website. To speak to someone on the phone, dial 1-800-622-HELP (1-800-622-4357) or send a text message to 1-800-487-4889.
The RPD also conducts a program to give people waiting to get into substance abuse treatment a safe place to stay until an opening in treatment becomes available. Moilanen says very few overdose victims take advantage of the treatment resources.
He says anyone wanting to learn about local addiction treatment options can get information from any Rochester Police Officer, or by contacting the Rochester Police Department.
