Charges: Rochester Woman Hospitalized After Severe Beating
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man has been accused of badly beating a woman at her home last weekend.
Thirty-three-year-old Abdirahman Mohamed Sufi was arraigned today in Olmsted County Court on a felony third-degree assault charge. His conditional bail was set at $50,000.
Police Told Victim Would Need Surgery
According to the criminal complaint, Rochester police were notified Saturday morning by St. Marys Hospital that there was an assault victim in the emergency department. The officer who responded to the report spoke with a woman whose face was bruised and whose right eye was swollen shut.
The court document says the officer was told that the victim would require surgery to address her injuries. The report also noted that her mouth appeared to be disfigured as the result of an apparent assault.
The woman told the officer that she was assaulted around 3 a.m. by a man she knew as “Sav.” She indicated that the man and his girlfriend were at her residence in northwest Rochester and that she told him to leave because he was threatening his girlfriend.
Punched More Than 20 Times
The criminal complaint says the man, whom she described as being very drunk, responded by punching her and then dragging her by the hair into her bedroom, where he continued to repeatedly punch her. The victim estimated that she was punched more than 20 times. While the alleged assault was taking place, the man instructed his girlfriend to sit on the bed and ordered her to “shut up or he would kill her.”
The charging document says investigators reviewed surveillance video from the victim’s apartment building and identified Sufi as the assault suspect. He was arrested Saturday evening after police located him at a local shopping center. Investigators also spoke with Sufi’s girlfriend, who stated that they had been drinking and were at the victim’s apartment.
Sufi's criminal history includes a felony drug sale conviction in 2020 that resulted in a 34 month prison sentence.
