That’s according to State Patrol Troy H. Christianson, who says Minnesota saw the lowest annual crash-related fatality count since 2019.
Data shared by Christianson shows declines in all of the categories of motor vehicle-related deaths.

“The Minnesota State Patrol remains committed to a dual-pronged approach for 2026. While public education on the dangers of speeding, impairment, and distraction is vital, it must be supported by extra enforcement,” Christianson said.

There were 370 traffic deaths on Minnesota’ roads last year. That’s a 22% drop from 2024 and an 8% decrease compared to 2023.
Christianson says 98 of last year’s traffic deaths were speed related, a drop from 138 in 2024. 70 of the motorists killed on the state’s roads in 2025 were unbuckled, a decrease from 101 reported in 2024.
30 people were killed in distracted driving related crashes in 2024. In 2025 21 lives were lost in distracted driving-related crashes, according to Christenson.
57 motorcyclists were killed last year, which is down from 76 in 2024. Christianson said motorcycle deaths reported last year were a six-year low.
Fatalities involving bicyclist was the only category to see an increase. Christenson said 14 bicyclists were killed on the state’s roads in 2025, which is double the bicyclist deaths reported in 2024.
“Let's work together to make 2026 the safest year yet. Buckle up, put the phone away, and drive for the conditions,” Christenson wrote.
