Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Three new filings today boosted the number of candidates for Rochester Mayor to seven. Jordan James Glynn, Spencer Goetzman, and George Rownd today joined Brent Coggins, Regina Mustafa, Kim Norton, and Charlie O’Connell on the August primary ballot to narrow the field of candidates seeking to succeed long-time Mayor Ardell Brede.

Primaries will also be needed to narrow the field of candidates for two of the City Council seats on the November ballot. Heather Holmes, Patrick Keane, Paul Myhrom, and Kim Sin are vying for the First Ward seat currently held by Ed Hruska, while Byron Clark, Brittany Marschall, Shawn Palmer, Mike Walters, and Judy Hickey have filed for the Fifth Ward seat being vacated by Mark Hickey. Judy Hickey is Mark’s wife. Third Ward Council Member Nick Campion has one challenger. Arlo Kroening filed for the position today.

As of the 5 pm filing deadline today, two of the three members of the Olmsted County Board up for election this year are running unopposed. No one filed to challenge the re-election bids of Ken Brown and Sheila Kiscaden, while Commissioner Matt Flynn will be running against current county employee John Helmers. Longtime Olmsted County prosecutor Jeffrey Hjerleid filed to run against County Attorney Mark Ostrem while Sheriff Kevin Torgerson’s bid for a second term is going unchallenged.

Primary elections will be needed in two of the four races for seats on the Rochester School Board. Three candidates filed for the each of the seats being vacated by Gary Smith and Anne Becker. Melissa Amundson, Vangie Castro, and Bruce Kaskubar are vying for one of the positions, while Greg Gallas, Cathy Nathan, and Abdi Roble filed for the other seat. Incumbent Jean Marvin is facing a challenge from Dwight Ferguson and John Eischen is running against incumbent Julie Workman.

Longtime Rochester State Representative Tina Liebling is the only Rochester lawmaker facing a primary challenge. She will face-off against fellow Democrat Abdulkadir Dahir Abdalla in August with the winner facing former County Commissioner Paul Wilson, who is seeking the House District 26A seat as a Republican. District 26B State Representative Republican Nels Pierson is running against Democrat Tyrel Clark, while incumbent Republican Duane Quam will face Democrat Jamie Mahlberg for the House District 25A seat and incumbent Democrat Duane Sauke is being challenged by Republican Kenneth Busch in House District 25B.
