Are many of our societal problems the result of the absence of critical thinking?

Jim Walters, who appears with Andy Brownell on Rochester Today for the monthly Power of Learning Show on KROC-AM, is among those who hold that opinion.

Jim believes that a shortage of critical thinking is eroding trust in the institutions that made this country great. The list of those institutions includes our government, families and religious organizations. As evidence, he points the declines we have seen in citizen engagement in the political process, from local PTSA meetings to precinct caucuses and just going to the polls and casting a ballot.

As for the cause, Walters says a wide range of factors are involved, but he largely blames intellectual laziness.  He suggests, for a variety of reasons, people are resistant to fully engaging their minds to examine the problems facing our society and the available solutions; particularly if they require compromise.
