Speed-Related Deaths in MN Up Nearly 100% Since Before Pandemic

St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The number of traffic fatalities in Minnesota this year continues to mount and data compiled by the state supports suggestions that speeding is largely to blame.

The Minnesota Department of Public Safety today reported that preliminary crash reports gathered through Tuesday show 335 people have died on Minnesota roads since the beginning of the year. That's 64 higher than the death toll reported in mid-September of last year and 79 above the count in 2019.

State officials say 114 of the deaths were speed-related. That represents a 36 percent increase from last year when 84 of the traffic deaths were speed-related. When compared to 2019, prior to the pandemic, the number of speed-related fatalities is up 97 percent.
