If you grew up in the 90s, you probably remember how hard it was to get a Nintendo 64.  People camped out and waited in lines overnight to be one of the first on Black Friday to grab one.  Cabbage Patch Kids, Tickle Me Elmo, were a few others that caused a huge frenzy.  The chaos was so huge in 2008 for Wii Fit and the Apple iPod Touch that an employee at a Walmart store was trampled to death.

Americans are still spending huge amounts of cash on Black Friday.  Adobe Analytics reported that $10.8 billion was spent online alone in 2024.  Even with those big dollars still coming in to major retailers, life has changed quite a bit.

One of the biggest changes we have witnessed is stores deciding to give their employees a much-deserved day off on Thanksgiving.  Below is a huge list of stores that are closed on Thanksgiving Day in 2025.

20+ Stores Closed Thanksgiving Day Throughout The United States, Including in Minnesota

When we were kids, we learned in history class that the roots of the Thanksgiving holiday go way back to 1621.  While this is an old holiday, the United States didn't officially set the fourth Thursday in November as "Thanksgiving" until 1941, thanks to a congressional resolution.

For years, Thanksgiving meant that the majority of people had the day off, got to gather with family and friends.  But in the 90s, we started to see a huge shift.  Stores started opening early for Black Friday doorbusters to help get their company out of the red faster.  Once 2012/2024 hit, quite a few stores appeared to be open as usual on Thanksgiving Day...or close to it.

Since the pandemic, many stores have adopted a new philosophy - closing their stores on Thanksgiving Day so their employees can be with their families.  Many stores are continuing with that trend for 2025.  Below are 20+ stores in Minnesota that have announced that they will be closed on Thanksgiving this year.
