One person is dead after a fatal collision in Winneshiek County earlier this week.

On Monday, October 7th at approximately 2:32 PM, a crash took place at the intersection of Highway 24 and 128th Street, according to reports from the county sheriff's office.

A tractor and train collided at this intersection which is between Jackson Junction and Fort Atkinson, which is about 65 miles south of Rochester.

Every single year, there are approximately 50 tractor-operator fatalities as a result of crashes with trains or motor vehicles, according to a report from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health.

In addition, Iowa is the 19th worst state in the country when it comes to highway-rail grade crossing collisions, according to a report from the Federal Railroad Administration.

In 2023, there were thirty-seven railway collisions which resulted in two deaths here in the Hawkeye State.

The details regarding this specific incident in Winneshiek County have not been made available to the public yet. However, law enforcement officials did confirm that one person is dead following the collision.

This is still a developing story and remains an open investigation. The sheriff’s office and Canadian Pacific Railway will be investigating the incident.
