NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is lashing out at the news media for trying to account for the millions of dollars that Trump said he had given to veterans' groups following a fundraiser earlier this year.

He's now listed 41 groups that he says have received all of the money he raised.

But about a dozen of those groups -- half the number who've responded to phone calls today from The Associated Press -- say they received checks from Trump just within the past week. The checks were typically dated May 24th. And that was the day The Washington Post ran a story questioning whether Trump had actually distributed all of the money.

Trump told reporters at a testy news conference in New York that the fundraiser, held at the same time as a Fox News GOP debate he was boycotting, raised $5.6 million. He previously had declined to disclose which charities had received the funds, and his campaign has gone back and forth about how much was raised.

He repeatedly criticized the press for making the money an issue, saying reporters "should be ashamed of themselves" for asking where the money had gone. He slammed the media as "unbelievably dishonest" and "sleazy" for its treatment of the issue.

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump is providing details of the charities that he says received millions of dollars from a veterans' fundraiser that he held earlier this year.

Today's announcement followed sustained pressure from media outlets trying to account for the money he promised.

Trump told reporters at a news conference in New York that his fundraiser raised $5.6 million. He said, "The money's all been sent." And he criticized the press for making the money an issue.

Trump had earlier claimed that he raised $6 million through a combination of pledges from wealthy friends, the public, and $1 million from himself. He said he had done so on the telethon-style fundraiser he held in Iowa in January as he boycotted a Fox News presidential debate.

But his campaign refused for months to disclose which charities received the money. And that led to speculation that the money raised was less than he had claimed.

Trump today complained, "It was very unfair that the press treated us so badly."

One veterans' group is complaining that Trump is using "veterans as political props."
