Carson's Story

Carson is a sweet 6-year-old cat who has been at Paws and Claws Humane Society in Rochester since July of 2021. So he's been at a shelter for almost 2 years! He was born in a foster home and adopted as a kitten from Paws and Claws. Unfortunately, the family brought him back a few years later because he started developing symptoms of this weird thing called pica.

What is Pica in Cats?

Pica is the reason Carson needs a special home. The website International Cat Care defines pica as "a term used to describe the consumption of non-edible materials." In Carson's case, this means he likes to eat anything soft. His first instance was actually eating a cloth toy and developing a gastrointestinal obstruction that required surgery.

Carson's Perfect Home

So the perfect home for Carson would be an area where there are no soft things for him to chew on. Paws and Claws suggests a separate room just for him. He can't have access to cloth toys, blankets, clothing, curtains, rugs with edges he could chew on, bedding with holes where he could pull the stuffing out and eat it, etc. It's a big ask, but Carson is the sweetest boy and deserves a happy and safe home and to be out of the cage he has called home for 2 years. And if you're thinking about making an area a cat room just for him, I suggest having a door with a screen or one that's glass so he can still see out.

How You Can Help

Obviously, the biggest way you can help is by adopting him if you have an environment that would be safe for him! But if you're not able to adopt, share this with your friends and family to help us find this guy a home.

If you're interested in learning more about Carson, you can find him on the Paws and Claws website. You can also apply to adopt from there as well.
