St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Minnesota Gov. Walz may be planning to take part in the state’s annual deer season opener this weekend - but he also has the Gopher football team on his mind.

Walz Friday issued a proclamation in honor of the team - one day before it plays its biggest game in recent memory.

Walz declared Friday “Maroon and Gold Day in honor of Gopher Football's historic game on Saturday.” The governor added this message to his Twitter feed: “The Gophers are 8-0 for the first time since 1941 and I can’t wait to cheer them on tomorrow! #SkiUMah #RTB.”

The Gophers host Penn St. in a game that could have a huge bearing on the Big 10 championship. Kickoff is 11:00 AM at TCF Bank Stadium. The University of Minnesota says this is the first sold-out home football game since 2015.

Coverage begins at 9:00 AM on News-Talk 1340 KROC AM and 96.9 FM.
