Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The extended winter is apparently having an impact on new home construction in Rochester. The City Building Safety Department issued only 25 permits for new single-family homes last month. It was the lowest total for the month of March since 2011. The city has now issued 60 permits for new single-family homes since the start of the year, which is almost 20 below the total through the first three months of last year.

Overall construction activity was strong last month. The city issued 165 building permits valued at $47.3 million. That pushed the total for the year to over $113 million, which is almost $40 million above the total through the first quarter of 2017.

Over half of the valuation total last month was due to one project. The Mayo Clinic took out a permit worth almost $29.8 million for the ongoing expansion of the Generose Building at St. Marys Hospital. The second largest permit was for the new Altra Credit Union location in northwest Rochester that was valued at just over $4.1 million.
