Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- The National Weather Service is tracking a storm system that could impact travel in southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa this weekend.

Freezing rain, sleet and snow are all possible, forecasters say. The predicted wintry precipitation comes on the heels of subzero temperatures blanketing much of Minnesota throughout the past week. 

Forecasters said as of Thursday morning that confidence is low regarding which form the precipitation will be in when it hits Minnesota. 

Travel Impacts Possible This Weekend With Wintry Mix Storm Predicted to Hit Southeast Minnesota, Northeast Iowa

Officials are predicting the system to arrive in southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa Saturday morning. It’s expected to move out of the region by late Saturday afternoon. 

The National Weather Service says multiple communities in the area targeted by the storm have a chance for ice accumulation. As of Thursday morning, the Rochester area has a 55% chance of seeing an ice glaze.

Chances for ice accumulation are 61% in Mower County and 64% in Fillmore County and communities in northeast Iowa have a more than 70% chance of an ice glaze forming. 

Forecasters said Thursday that the storm track could still shift before arriving on Saturday and that the potential movement would lead to changes in snow and ice accumulation. 

Officials are advising residents of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa to monitor forecasts and to consider alternative travel plans if possible.
