Driver Taken to Hospital After Crashing into Zumbro River in Downtown Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A motorist was brought to a hospital after being retrieved from the Zumbro River in downtown Rochester.

A news release issued by the Rochester Fire Department says crews responded to the scene shortly before 11:30 Thursday night. 

Preliminary reports indicate the occupant of the vehicle was talking.

Vehicle Crashes into Zumbro River Near 6th St. SW and South Broadway Ave. in Downtown Rochester

Responding firefighters found an upside down vehicle in 2-3 feet of water just east of the intersection of South Broadway Ave. and 6th St. SW. Two sections of railing that line the riverbank had been knocked over.

Crews deployed an extension ladder to reach the river more than 20 feet below.

At the same time, firefighters also used an aerial ladder to assist with lifting the occupant if needed.

The news release says the occupant was able to be walked through the water to the east side of the river. They met a Mayo Clinic Ambulance crew on the bike path/ramp where they were assessed. 

No One Else Found After Search

First responders determined that only one person was in the vehicle after a search, according to the news release. 

The occupant was taken by ambulance to a hospital. An update on their condition is not available. 

Along with the segments of railing, significant damage to the vehicle’s roof was also reported. 

Rochester Police Release Info About Driver

Rochester police are describing the driver as an adult female. A spokesperson is describing her injuries as minor. 

She was later booked into the Olmsted County Jail on suspicion of DWI, police say.
