That’s according to a Facebook post published by the City of Zumbrota. The union that represents the city’s police officers previously shared that they were informed city leaders had requested information regarding outsourcing local law enforcement services to the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office.
A previous version of the Zumbrota City Council’s agenda for their Thursday meeting had an agenda item that called for councilmembers to discuss the city’s police force.
Wednesday night’s social media post came following a meeting between city leaders and the Zumbrota Police Officers and Sergeants Local 425. The meeting led to a proposal which council members will discuss at the end of Thursday’s meeting behind closed doors.
The updated agenda for Thursday’s meeting indicates the agenda item regarding a discussion of the community’s police force and what a contract with the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office would look like has been pulled. Officials plan to provide more information regarding the proposal during the November 2 city council meeting.
Wednesday’s announcement came after the union published a letter detailing a discussion with city officials that happened on Friday. The announcement also called for personal attacks and threats directed at city leaders regarding the policing proposal to stop.
The letter included a call for community members who support the city having a police department to contact their elected leaders.
The city’s website indicates the Zumbrota Police Department is made up of a chief, two sergeants and four patrol officers. As of 2021 the population of Zumbrota is measured at 3,796 people.
