Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester area has reached another milestone when it comes to COVID-19 vaccinations.

The latest totals reported by the Minnesota Department of Health indicate nearly 96,500 Olmsted County residents are now fully vaccinated against the new virus. That equates to 80 percent of county residents 16 years and older. 83 percent, or over 100,600 Olmsted County residents over the age of 15, have had at least one dose of COVID vaccine.

Statewide, over 2.85 million Minnesotans are fully vaccinated and more than 3.04 million have had at least one dose. That represents almost 67 percent of state residents 16 years and older.

The impact of the pandemic continues to lessen throughout the state. On Saturday, state health officials reported fewer than 80 new infections, and only one of the new cases was reported in Olmsted County. Six coronavirus-related deaths were reported statewide.

The number of people hospitalized in Minnesota due to COVID also continues to dwindle. As of Friday, there were 107 people hospitalized throughout the state because of the viral illness. Only 27 of the patients were in intensive care. At the peak of the surge last fall and winter, almost 400 ICU beds in Minnesota were filled by COVID patients.
