Raptors knot series

TORONTO (AP) — Jonas Valanciunas led a late charge that allowed the Toronto Raptors to tie their Eastern Conference semifinal series at a game apiece.

Valanciunas had 11 points and seven rebounds in the fourth quarter and overtime to lead Toronto's 96-92 victory over Miami. He finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Raptors, who avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this postseason.

Valanciunas was part of a balanced Toronto attack. DeMarre Carroll finished with 21 points, DeMar DeRozan had 20 and Kyle Lowry bounced back from a poor shooting night in the opener to score 18.

The Raptors rallied after the Heat scored seven straight points to take a 77-70 lead midway through the fourth quarter. Miami forced overtime on a 3-pointer by Goran Dragic in the closing seconds.

Dragic finished with 20 points, while Dwyane Wade and Joe Johnson each had 17 for the Heat.

Hassan Whiteside contributed 13 points and 13 boards for the Heat, who host Game 3 on Saturday.

NBA-WARRIORS

Curry fails to practice

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr says Stephen Curry probably won't play in Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinals at Portland Saturday.

Curry did not practice on Thursday as he tries to recover from a sprained right knee suffered in Game 4 of the Warriors' first-round series April 24 against Houston. He has played just 38 minutes in the playoffs after leading the NBA in scoring, 3-pointers, free throw percentage and steals during the regular season.

The Warriors lead the Trail Blazers two games to none.

Vogel out as coach

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Pacers will have a new head coach next season.

The team has announced that Frank Vogel will not return following the team's first-round playoff exit. Vogel was 250-181 in five and a half seasons with the Pacers and led the team to the playoffs five times.

Team president Larry Bird said he believes it's time for a new voice to lead the Pacers, keeping with his long-held philosophy on short shelf lives for coaches.

NHL PLAYOFFS-SCHEDULE

Preds, Stars get even

UNDATED (AP) — The Nashville Predators have knotted their NHL second-round series at two games apiece by winning the longest game in team history.

Mike Fisher ended a marathon with an unassisted goal 11:12 into triple overtime to complete the Predators' comeback in a 4-3 triumph against San Jose. Fisher's second goal of the game came on the Predators' 44th shot on Martin Jones.

Brent Burns scored twice for the Sharks, including a power-play tally that put San Jose ahead 3-2 seven minutes into the third period before James Neal tied the game with 4:21 left in regulation. Neal and Colin Wilson each finished with a goal and an assist, while Pekka Rinne stopped 44 shots.

Game 5 is Saturday in San Jose.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars are heading home after tying their second-round series at two games apiece.

The Stars bounced back from a 6-1 rout in Game 3 by knocking off the Blues 3-2 in St. Louis on Cody Eakin's goal 2:58 into overtime. Eakin beat Brian Elliott on a 3-on-2 break after the Blues pressured goalie Kari Lehtonen on the opposite end.

Radek Faksa and Patrick Sharp scored 69 seconds apart to put the Stars ahead 2-1 early in the third period. Sharp also assisted on the game-winner.

Vladimir Tarasenko scored the Blues' first goal and set up Paul Stastny's game-tying tally on a power play with 6:54 left in the second period.

Game 5 is Saturday in Dallas.

Veteran coming back to Panthers

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Florida Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr is prepared to play through his 45th birthday.

The NHL's No. 3 goal-scorer has signed a one-year contract with the club after leading the Panthers with 66 points this past season. Jagr will become the 10th player in NHL history to play at least 23 seasons.

Adams finalists announced

NEW YORK (AP) — Barry Trotz is one of the three finalists for the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year after leading the Washington Capitals to the league's best regular-season record.

The Caps were 56-18-8, setting club records for total victories and road wins.

Florida's Gerard Gallant and Lindy Ruff of Dallas are the other finalists after guiding their teams to division titles.

The winner will be announced June 22 during the NHL Awards in Las Vegas.

Cubs draw first blood

UNDATED (AP) — The Chicago Cubs have taken Game 1 of a four-game set that pits the National League's top two teams.

Kyle Hendricks combined with five relievers on a three-hitter as the Cubs won for the eighth time in nine games, 5-2 over Washington. Hendricks limited the Nationals to two hits and two walks over six shutout innings to outduel Joe Ross.

Ben Zobrist provided most of the offense, opening the scoring with a two-run single in the fourth and added a two-run blast in the eighth. Tommy La Stella had three hits and scored twice for the Cubs, who top the majors at 21-6.

Jayson Werth socked a two-run homer but couldn't stop the Nats from falling to 19-9.

Elsewhere in the majors:

— Rookie Trevor Story's 11th home run of the season sparked Colorado's team-record, 13-run explosion in the fifth inning of a 17-7 pounding of San Francisco. Story, Nolan Arenado smacked his major league-leading 12th home run and had three RBIs for the Rockies, whose previous club mark for runs in an inning was 11 set in 1996. Story and Gerardo Parra also drove in three runs apiece as part of Colorado's 17-hit attack.

— Derek Norris and Wil Myers hit solo homers to back Colin Rea in San Diego's 5-3 win over the New York Mets. Rea carried a one-hit shutout into the ninth before Curtis Granderson homered to chase the Padres' starter.

— Jaime Garcia combined with two relievers on a five-hitter and Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run double as the Cardinals blanked Philadelphia 4-0 in St. Louis. Brandon Moss hit a first-inning homer that was estimated to have traveled 462 feet to right field, the longest homer by a left-handed hitter in the 10-year history of the new Busch Stadium.

— Adam Conley worked into the sixth inning and Christian Yelich smacked a two-run homer in Florida's 4-0 shutout of Arizona. Conley gave up two hits over 5 1/3 innings before four relievers finished the five-hitter.

— Jay Bruce cracked a three-run homer and Brandon Phillips added a two-run shot and three RBIs as Cincinnati roughed up Milwaukee 9-5. Adam Duvall added a two-run blast to help the Reds win their second straight since a 1-8 skid.

— Boston stayed hot as Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez and Jackie Bradley Jr. belted solo homers to power the Red Sox to their ninth win in 11 games, 7-3 over the White Sox in Chicago. The Bosox's bullpen came up with six innings of one-run relief against the White Sox, who fell to an AL-best 19-10.

— Seattle picked up its third straight win as Robinson Cano lined a tiebreaking, three-run double in the ninth inning to lead the Mariners past Houston 6-3. Cano had three hits and four RBIs in the Mariners' 12th victory in 15 games.

— Baltimore beat the New York Yankees 1-0 on a sacrifice fly by Pedro Alvarez in the bottom of the 10th. Kevin Gausman gained a no-decision in holding the Yankees to three hits over eight shutout innings.

— Toronto crushed Texas 12-2 as Edwin Encarnacion belted a three-run homer and had six RBIs. J.A. Happ is 4-0 after holding the Rangers to a run and six hits in seven innings.

— Mike Napoli smacked a three-run homer and Michael Brantley was 3-for-4 with three RBIs as Cleveland ripped Detroit 9-4 to complete a three-game sweep. Chris Gimenez added a solo shot in his first game since being acquired by the Indians.

MLB to make call on Marlins-Bucs series soon

CHICAGO (AP) — Commissioner Rob Manfred says a decision will be made Friday or Monday on whether games between the Pirates and Marlins will be played in Puerto Rico this month. Players on both sides are expressing concern about the Zika virus, prompting MLB to move the games to Miami.

The teams are scheduled to play May 30-31 in San Juan to celebrate Roberto Clemente Day.

A's Bassitt to have elbow surgery

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland right-hander pitcher Chris Bassitt will undergo Tommy John surgery on his pitching elbow on Friday.

Bassitt was 0-2 with a 6.11 ERA in five starts with the A's. He allowed a career-high seven runs on 10 hits in 3 2-3 innings last Thursday in Detroit and was placed on the disabled list the following day.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-PENN STATE-SANDUSKY

Judge says Sandusky abuse allegations date back 40 years

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — A judge says that insurers in litigation with Penn State claim a boy told football coach Joe Paterno in 1976 that he had been molested by Jerry Sandusky.

That's according to Pennlive.com, which also says that the order by Philadelphia Judge Gary Glazer also cited reports by unnamed assistant coaches they witnessed inappropriate contact between Sandusky and children.

Glazer wrote in a decision on insurance coverage for Sandusky-related claims there was "no evidence that reports of these incidents ever went further up the chain of command at PSU."

Sandusky is serving decades in prison for sexual abuse of 10 boys, the earliest incident in 1998.

Seahawks put Beast on retired list

UNDATED (AP) — The Seattle Seahawks have placed Marshawn Lynch on the NFL's reserve/retired list after the running back indicated in February that he was ready to end his football career.

Lynch concluded his career with 9,112 yards rushing and 74 touchdowns in the regular season, and another nine TDs in the playoffs. The Seahawks will save $6.5 million with Lynch's retirement.

In other NFL news:

— Washington has signed tight end Jordan Reed to a five-year extension worth about $50 million, including $22 million in guaranteed money. He had 87 catches last season for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns as Washington's leading receiver.

— Pittsburgh has released offensive tackle Mike Adams, who missed all of last season following back surgery. He was a second round pick in the 2012 draft and started 20 games across three seasons.

PGA-WELLS FARGO CHAMPIONSHIP

Tie for lead; spectator disruption

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Steve Wheatcroft and Andrew Loupe share the lead through the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship following 7-under 65s.

Rickie Fowler shot 71 and Rory McIlroy a 73 despite having their rounds interrupted by a spectator. The fan threw a golf ball with an earplug attached to it toward the golfers as McIlroy was hitting his tee shot on the 6th hole. The police threw the spectator out. No one was injured.

LPGA-YOKOHAMA TIRE CLASSIC

Beck leads in Alabama

PRATTVILLE, Ala. (AP) — Laetitia Beck took the first-round lead in the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic with a bogey-free 7-under 65.

The first Israeli player to qualify for the LPGA Tour was in the first group of the day off the 10th tee. She birdied four of the final five holes on her opening nine and had three more on the second nine.

Annie Park and Minjee Lee were tied for second at 67.

NHL-FORT MCMURRAY-DONATIONS

NHL, teams send donations to fire ravaged area

NEW YORK (AP) — The National Hockey League, Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames are each donating $100,000 to the Canadian Red Cross relief efforts in fire-ravaged Fort McMurray, Alberta.

Wildfires have forced the evacuation of more than 80,000 residents and have destroyed 1,600 homes and other buildings in Fort McMurray.

The NHL also encouraged fans to visit www.redcross.ca to make a contribution.

Help is coming from outside the province as well, with the St. Louis Blues donating the proceeds of their 50/50 raffle at their Stanley Cup playoff game Thursday night toward relief efforts. Blues forward Scottie Upshall is from Fort McMurray.
