Panthers outlast Colts in OT to stay unbeaten

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers remain the NFC's only unbeaten team, but they needed overtime to stay that way.

Graham Gano drilled a 52-yard field goal at 9:38 of overtime to give the 7-0 Panthers a 29-26 win over Indianapolis. Both teams traded field goals on their first two possessions of OT, with Gano extending the game on a 42-yard boot after Adam Vinatieri hit one from 50 yards out.

Gano almost became the goat of the game. He missed an extra point early in the fourth quarter before the Colts scored 17 unanswered points in the final 7:07 to extend the game. Andrew Luck fueled the Colts' comeback with touchdown passes to Andre Johnson and Coby Fleener before Vinatieri hit a 24-yard kick as regulation expired.

Cam Newton had an uneven game while playing through a hard rainstorm, although his eight-yard scoring strike to Corey Brown put Carolina ahead 23-6 with 10:44 remaining in regulation. Newton was 16 of 35 for 248 yards, two TDs, one interception and a lost fumble.

Luck was picked off three times while completing 23 of his 47 throws for 231 yards and two touchdowns for the 3-5 Colts. His third interception set up the game-winning kick.

The Panthers are one of a league-record four teams who are off to 7-0 starts. Carolina has won 11 straight regular-season games dating to last year.

NFL-STEELERS

Pittsburgh loses Bell

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Steelers All-Pro running back Le'Veon Bell is done for the season. He injured his right knee Sunday against Cincinnati and the Steelers have placed him on injured reserve.

Bell rushed for 556 yards and three touchdowns on 113 carries this season, and he also had 24 receptions for 136 yards.

Also in the NFL:

— Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning has another accomplished target at his disposal after the team acquired two-time Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis from the San Francisco 49ers. The 31-year-old Davis has 55 touchdown receptions in 10 NFL seasons and joins a team that is off to a 7-0 start. The 49ers will get sixth-round picks in 2016 and 2017 as part of the deal, and the Broncos get a seventh-round selection in 2016.

— The Niners also are changing quarterbacks. A person with knowledge of the decision says Colin Kaepernick has been told he won't start Sunday after failing to engineer a touchdown drive for the second straight game. Kaepernick will be replaced by backup Blaine Gabbert.

— Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette is undergoing surgery to stabilize ligaments in his neck, a day after being taken off the field on a backboard during Seattle's game at Dallas. The team says Lockette has full motion and feeling in all his extremities and a good prognosis.

— Bills coach Rex Ryan expects quarterback Tyrod Taylor to start against the Miami Dolphins on Sunday after missing two games with a sprained left knee. Backup EJ Manuel has struggled while filling in, and committed three turnovers, two of which were returned for touchdowns against Jacksonville.

New job for Mattingly

MIAMI (AP) — Don Mattingly says he has a four-year deal, but he plans to stay at least 10.

The Miami Marlins have introduced Mattingly as their new manager, the team's seventh since June 2010. Mattingly was hired last week, but the announcement was delayed until after the World Series. He became available when he and the Dodgers parted ways last month.

Mattingly went 446-363 with the Dodgers and won the NL West the past three years, but the team was just 8-11 in the postseason and did not reach the World Series. He goes from a franchise that led the majors with a $290 million payroll last season to a club that ranked last at $64.9.

Mattingly becomes owner Jeffrey Loria's first high-profile managerial hire since Ozzie Guillen four years ago. Guillen was fired after one troubled season, and his four-year contract just came off the books.

WORLD SERIES

Crown Royals

KANSAS CITY (AP) — Fans of the Kansas City Royals are still celebrating their team's win over the Mets in the World Series. The American League champs finished off the NL champs last night with a come from behind 7-2 win in 12 innings. The victory in the 2015 Fall Classic completes a year-long odyssey for the Royals as last October they lost the Series in seven games to the Giants.

A parade in Kansas City is slated for Tuesday to celebrate the second World Series championship in franchise history.

And then the offseason begins and, oddly enough, the opening series of the 2016 season has the same two teams playing in Kansas City.

Cards pick up option on Garcia, decline Broxton

UNDATED (AP) — The St. Louis Cardinals have exercised their $11.5 million option on left-hander Jaime Garcia and declined their $9 million mutual option on right-handed reliever Jonathan Broxton, who gets a $2 million buyout. St. Louis also said that infielder Pete Kozma and catchers Ed Easley and Travis Tartamella have been assigned outright to Triple-A Memphis.

In other offseason moves:

— The Washington Nationals declined their 2016 club option on oft-injured outfielder Nate McLouth and 2016 mutual option on reliever Casey Janssen.

— The Cincinnati Reds have declined contract options on infielder Skip Schumaker and reliever Burke Badenhop, making them free agents.

NBA-SCHEDULE

Warriors, Clippers improve to 4-0.

UNDATED (AP) — The Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers are the first four-win team in the NBA this season.

The defending champs are 4-0 after Stephen Curry scored 21 of his 30 points in the third quarter of a 119-69 laugher against Memphis. Curry was 10 of 16 from the field and hit four 3-pointers before sitting out the fourth quarter.

Ian Clark added 15 points off the bench and Festus Ezeli added 14 and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Warriors.

The Clippers are 4-0 for just the fourth time in franchise history. Blake Griffin had 22 points and 10 rebounds as Los Angeles held off Phoenix 102-96. Chris Paul chipped in 17 points and five assists for the Clippers, who haven't been 4-0 since 1985.

Oklahoma City had a chance to open 4-0 until James Harden scored 37 points in the Houston Rockets' first win of the season, a 110-105 decision over the Thunder.

The game was tied at 100 apiece until the Rockets went on a 7-1 run, capped by Harden's 3-pointer with about two minutes left.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 29 points, and Russell Westbrook added 25 points, eight rebounds and 11 assists.

In other NBA action:

— LaMarcus Aldridge scored 19 points and Kawhi Leonard delivered a double double of 18 points and 14 rebounds in San Antonio's 94-84 victory over the Knicks in New York. Duncan had 16 points, 10 rebounds and six assists in his NBA-record 954th victory with one team, breaking the mark set by Utah's John Stockton.

— LeBron James became the youngest player to reach 25,000 career points while delivering 22 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in Cleveland's 107-100 comeback win at Philadelphia. Mo Williams scored 21 points for the Cavaliers, who trailed by 15 before winning their third straight since a season-opening loss to Chicago.

— Milwaukee won a battle of winless teams as Jerryd Bayless scored 26 points in a 103-96 triumph over Brooklyn. Greg Monroe had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Bucks, while Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 21 points.

— Damian Lillard had 34 points on 14 of 25 shooting and added seven assists to lead Portland past Minnesota 106-101. The Timberwolves built an early 17-point lead following an emotional tribute to coach Flip Saunders, who died before the season opener.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Hawks halt Kings' streak...Leafs surprise Stars

UNDATED (AP) — The NHL's hottest team went down to defeat on Monday, as did the top team in the Western Conference.

The Kings had won seven straight before the Chicago Blackhawks scored three unanswered goals in the third period of a 4-2 win against Los Angeles. Patrick Kane tied the game 82 seconds into the final stanza and assisted on Teuvo Teravainen's game-winner midway through the period. Jonathan Toews and Artem Anisimov also finished with a goal and an assist for the Blackhawks.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were just 1-7-2 this season before James Reimer made 19 of his 43 saves in the second period of a 4-1 triumph over Dallas. The game was tied 1-1 until Joffrey Lupul scored twice in the second period, breaking the deadlock 21 seconds into the period before his power-play goal put the Maple Leafs ahead 3-1.

Lupul also assisted on a power-play tally by Morgan Rielly, who set up a pair of goals. The Stars fell to 9-3-0 despite Jamie Benn's league-leading 10th goal of the season. Dallas still leads the West by one point over St. Louis.

The NHL's other Monday game had Vancouver beating Philadelphia 4-1. Bo Horvat had a goal and an assist to help the Canucks take a 2-1 lead before Jake Virtanen and Matt Bartkowski scored third-period goals. Ryan Miller stopped 27 shots for the Canucks.

NHL-SENATORS

Stone suspended

OTTAWA, Ontario (AP) — Ottawa Senators leading scorer Mark Stone has received a two-game suspension from the NHL for his hit to the head of Detroit's Landon Ferraro. Stone was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head during Saturday's game.

Stone tops his team with 13 points.

Tar Heels start on top

UNDATED (AP) — North Carolina is No. 1 in The Associated Press preseason Top 25 for a record ninth time. The Tar Heels received 35 first-place votes from the 65-member national media panel. Kentucky is ranked second with 10 No. 1 votes, followed by Maryland, which had 14 first-place votes, Kansas, which was No. 1 on five ballots and defending national champion Duke is fifth.

The second five consists of Virginia, which got one first-place vote, Iowa State, Oklahoma, Gonzaga and Wichita State.

North Carolina was last a preseason No. 1 in 2011-12.

Court date for QB

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett is due in court later this week following his weekend citation with a misdemeanor offense of operating a vehicle under the influence. Barrett has been suspended for one game after he was stopped at a Columbus police check point early Saturday morning.

The 20-year-old Barrett took over as the full-time starter for the top-ranked Buckeyes on Oct. 24, throwing for 223 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-7 win over Rutgers.

And coach Urban Meyer says Barrett will forfeit his summer financial aid as part of his punishment for being cited for operating a vehicle while impaired. Meyer handed out a similar punishment in 2012 when offensive lineman Jack Mewhort and tight end Jake Stoneburner were arrested on misdemeanor charges.

COLLEGE ATHLETICS-NOTRE DAME-LAWSUIT

Irish say official named in suit has been dismissed

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — A University of Notre Dame official says the school has fired an academic coach after a student complained the woman coerced him into having unwelcome sexual encounters with her daughter.

The official says the dismissal occurred two weeks before the student's attorneys filed a lawsuit Friday against the coach and university.

Notre Dame spokesman Paul Browne said through a statement that the university launched an investigation after the black student's claim against the academic coach.
