Blizzard Starting to Wind Down in North Dakota
Grand Forks, ND (KROC-AM News) - The storm system that missed this region by a few hundred miles has completely shut down travel across a large area of North Dakota.
As of Saturday morning, a blizzard warning remained in effect throughout central and portions of eastern North Dakota where snowfall totals between 2 and 2 1/2 feet have been reported along with 60 mile-per-hour winds. The dangerous conditions prompted North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum to declare a state of emergency to free up resources to respond to the situation.
The National Weather Service is predicting gradually improving conditions through the day with the snow and wins diminishing sometime this evening. Still, travel may be impossible in many areas because of strong winds with gusts as high as 45 mph this afternoon.
The storm grazed sections of northwestern Minnesota, which were under a winter storm warning yesterday. 8-10 inches of snow was reported near the North Dakota border in the Grand Forks area, while the reports from the Fargo-Moorhead area have been in the 4-6 inch range.
