Blooming Prairie Woman Waives Extradition from Texas
Brownsville, TX (KROC-AM News) - The grandmother from Blooming Prairie Minnesota who sparked a nationwide manhunt waived her right to an extradition hearing during a brief appearance before a judge in Texas today.
The Fort Myers, Florida newspaper The News Press reports the judge then issued an order that gave authorities from Minnesota and Florida 10 days to take Lois Riess in the custody. It’s expected that she will be headed to Florida, where prosecutors have already filed murder charges against her for allegedly murdering a 59-year-old woman in a rented condo at Fort Myers Beach earlier this month. Investigators allege the motive for the crime was identity theft.
Prosecutors in Minnesota have charged the 56-year-old Riess with felony theft but have yet to formally charge her with the murder of her husband in their rural Blooming Prairie home. 54-year-old David Riess was found shot to death on March 23rd.
Police in South Padre Island, Texas, where Riess was captured last Thursday, have disclosed that a search of her hotel turned up two handguns. Forensic tests will be conducted to determine if one of them was the weapon used in both slayings.
