Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - An Olmsted County judge has approved the involuntary commitment of a Rochester woman who tried to kill her children earlier this year.

The commitment was recommended after a psychological evaluation determined 33-year-old Farhiyo Abdullahi was mentally ill and suffering from schizophrenia. The examiner found Abdullahi has an extensive history of mental illness and discontinued using her medication in August. That was less than two months before she put her 5 young kids in her car and filled it with exhaust fumes until some became sick.

The examiner’s report says Abdullahi indicated she had frequent thoughts of suicide and talked of “hearing voices telling her to kill herself.” She told the examiner she hid her mental illness from social workers “because she did not want to lose her children.”

The report also indicates she has been verbally aggressive toward other inmates and deputies at the county jail. She was still in jail as of Tuesday morning but is expected to be transferred soon to a state-run treatment facility.

Judge Kevin Lund has ordered an initial six-month commitment and her treatment record will be reviewed to see if it needs to be extended.

Her attempted murder case will be on hold until she is ruled competent.
